When We Were Young and Unafraid Scenic Build

As a Master Carpenter, this project was challenging as this show used the same theatre space as Julius Caesar while the two opening dates were two weeks apart. This 70s set was of a kitchen area of a family-run inn from the play When We Were Young and Unafraid by Sarah Treem.

As the play Julius Caesar closed, it was time to load in materials for this upcoming play. To accommodate the short changeover time, I prebuilt several items beforehand, so that most of the work to be done in the theatre space is to secure the prebuilt parts to the floor. These items include the vertical flats for the walls, the frames for the kitchen island, and the frame for the door. To help aligning the parts, I taped out the positions where the items would go, so that multiple items can be placed at the same time without the risk of misalignment.

Another interesting challenge was to have the sink function for the play. To do so, the taps were connected to a small water pump in the backstage area. When the water needs to be available, the Stage Manager will cue the Pump Operator to turn on the pump so that water can flow to the tap. The pump cannot be turned on all the time as the pressure will build up in the tubing, causing the motor to fail (as we learned that fact the hard way). Another option considered was to place a water tank at a higher place than where the taps were. Yet, we did not use this option as there were not much space available overhead for the tank to be placed securely. Moreover, this option would also be more expensive.

Total budget spent: $2,428.79
