3D-printed Iris Mechanism

Worked in team of three to design and 3D-print a modified iris mechanism. Familiarized with concepts of tolerances and advantages and limitations of additive manufacturing.

I have always been fascinated by sci-fi designs. In many sci-fi movies, the image of an iris door is common which inspired me to choose this design to CAD. The requirement for this project specified that the final assembly needs at least five parts, with each part having at least 4 features in the feature manager. To accommodate these requirement, the team decided to make a bird cage with the iris mechanism being the door. The model was made using SolidWorks and 3D-printed with PLA.
